Isle of Hope sung by Paul Hennessy - Tenor

Irish tenor Paul Hennessy will be the guest singer at the launch of Peggy Murphy's book,"The Clubhouse Down Our Street" in Teach Na Teamhrach, Navan this Friday night and the above is one of his videos from youtube. Paul has been singing professionally for over twenty two years and has made numerous appearances on TV and radio and was a member of the original "Irish Tenors" and "Celtic Tenors". He has sung in Croke Park on no less than eleven occasions and guested on programmes such as The Late Late Show and The Rose of Tralee. Also he's recorded a number of albums for charity including one for Our Lady's Children Hospital and "To Be A Child Again" in aid of The Mannix Kane Appeal, which can be downloaded from iTunes. Ray Murtagh is providing the music on the night and Tracey Carty of the Evolution Stage School is launching the book. So if you're in Navan on Friday night and want a show, sure where else would you b

"Centenary in Poetry and Prose"/ Book Launch!

"Centenary in Poetry and Prose"/Book Launch!

The Meath Writers' Circle is launching a book to mark the centenary of the the 1916 Rising although the material included covers the period from 1914 to the present day. The venue is the Trim Castle Hotel on Thursday the 3rd of March at 8 pm and everyone is welcome to attend. The night will include a mixture of music, poetry and song and the book will retail at €10. The cover photo above is of CĂșchulainn and Ferdia, Ardee County Louth and is by the Kells artist and sculptor Ann Meldon Hugh, while the photos back are of a special ten shilling coin that was issued in 1966 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Rising and was kindly donated by Noel French of The Meath Heritage Centre. The book will hopefully bring a little insight and reminder into what were troubled times while giving others the chance to look back or reflect on what might or could have been. Contributors' copies will be at the door, so if you have an article or poem included, be sure to ask. Hope to see you there.

Proclamation Reading 1916!

Proclamation Reading 1916!

St Patrick.
One of the many events to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising was held on Tara last Monday when members of the Kilmessan Camogie Club and also members of the Dunsany Football Club got to read excerpts from the Proclamation. The readings are to be part of a programme that goes out on RTE later in the year and a film crew was on site on what was a very sunny afternoon. I believe a major event is being planned for the Hill on Easter Monday when local groups will gather around six in the evening for a night of story and song but more info on that to come.

The Meath Writers' Circle/February Meeting 2016!

About fourteen people turned out last Thursday night for the first meeting of the year in the Trim Castle Hotel and while some poems were read, events to mark the centenary of the Rising and the launch of our forthcoming book on the period and indeed the last hundred years, took order of precedence. The launch itself is on Thursday the 3rd of March in the Trim Castle Hotel at 8 pm and everyone is welcome. But more on that to follow. A night of poetry and song and plenty of conversation. Hope to see you there!

Pick Your Favourite 1916 Poem!

Pick Your Favourite 1916 Poem!

If you visit the Irish Independent website there are a number of articles on 1916, and indeed as you would expect its influence or otherwise on the present, but there is also a chance to vote for your favourite poem of the Rising and these include some of the better known and a few there that seldom get an airing. You can both read and listen to them being recited and then click on whichever one takes your fancy. I suspect W.B. Yeats and 1916 will be the one most preferred but you never know? Type in Irish Independent/Rebel Poems and it should come up. Wish I could post a link but it doesn't seem to work!
